†Oak; Quercus

Description: Oaks range all the way from a shrub six inches high to the small common scrub oak that grows in the mountains to the large tree that grows in fertile valleys. Q. Gambelli is the most important in the Great Basin (colorplate 20).

Preparation and Uses: The acorn can serve as an emergency food but must be leached of its tannic acid before it is eaten. The wood is used for digging sticks and bows.

Onion, Wild Garlic, Nodding Onion; Allium

Description: Resembling the domestic onions, these small wild onions and garlics always have the familiar onion smell when their leaves are bruised. Plants looking like onions but lacking the characteristic smell should be checked closely, as some species such as death camas (Zigadenus) are very poisonous. Late in the season one can find the small onion plant by first finding the stalk. The dried flower head on the stalk looks like a white ball against the ground (colorplate 21).

Preparation and Uses: The whole plant is edible raw or cooked and is an excellent addition to any dish.
